    Gotye's Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra

    Gotye's Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra

Just when we thought we were tired of having “Somebody That I Used to Know” stuck in our heads, Gotye reproduced his hit single in the form of a “YouTube Orchestra,” and we’re hooked all over again. Starring the legions of YouTube musicians who have covered the song, the video remixes together diverse interpretations of talented and entertaining admirers, spanning a classical choir to a banjo player alone in her room. These inspiring acts, put together with Gotye’s smart mixing skills, is an uplifting symphony and an homage to fans that reveals the symbiotic inspiration between a mainstream celebrity and those of YouTube fame.

    Marketing Buzz:

    Tesco’s UK Virtual Grocery Store

    Tesco’s UK Virtual Grocery Store

After a long flight home, the last thing we want to do is go on a milk run. Supermarket giant Tesco is looking to help fill those cupboards as soon as travelers arrive home, launching a two-week trial of the country’s first interactive virtual grocery store. While waiting to board a flight, proactive British travelers in Gatwick Airport can browse products on a large digital “fridge” screen and scan bar codes for what they want to buy with their mobile Tesco app. The shopper then sets the date on which they want the groceries to arrive. Eliminating one more to-do in busy schedules, this convenient virtual shopping could be the future of retail.

    Everlane

    Everlane

We’ve all been witness to the rise of the luxury staple—a white tee for $150? No thank you! Everlane is attempting to create a new e-retail model, producing exclusive and limited luxury essentials for cheap by eliminating middlemen and brand markups. Shoppers can click through Everlane’s aesthetically simple website to shop for designer-quality basics that everyone needs: the perfect plain t-shirt, an effortless travel bag, and the essential belt. Shoppers who invite friends to the site also gain access to their secret shop, making the experience even more exclusive. Shark Tooth Accessories

    Shark Tooth Accessories

What is it about Shark Week? We don’t know how the celebration of our finned friends turned into an unofficial weeklong American summer holiday, but every year the excitement for Shark Week seems to increase. In honor of this year’s Discovery Channel tribute to the scariest creature we know, our carts are filled with shark tooth accessories, like this Talastone oversized shark tooth fossil necklace (dipped in 14 carat gold, of course) and these wild cufflinks from AvantGardeDesign. Perfectly in tune with the ‘Touch of Danger’ fashion cravings we’ve been observing in Gen Ys, shark tooth accessories keep us looking sharp.

    App-Tastic:

    Burner

    Burner

Fans of HBO’s The Wire might recognize the term “burner”—slang for a disposable cell phone that keeps you anonymous in order to conduct crimes in peace. But sometimes, even non-criminals could use a temporary, private number to use in a pinch. For $1.99, Burner Disposable Phone Numbers for iPhone makes a temporary number that you can “burn” as soon as you are done with it, making calls through the app completely anonymous. A new number can be created in seconds at any time—perfect for giving the creepy guy at the bar some faux digits! We’ve been talking a lot lately about how Gen Ys are starting to prize their privacy, and Burner is another piece of evidence that they might just be pulling back.

    BrushDJ

    BrushDJ

We all know how important it is to brush your teeth for two minutes every morning and night, but even grown-ups sometimes slack on how long they spend polishing those pearly whites. Enter BrushDJ, an app created by a dentist to keep us brushing to the beat for just the right amount of time. BrushDJ acts as a timer, playing 2 minutes of random music from your device to encourage proper brushing. It even allows users to set reminders for when they should floss, rinse, and schedule a check-up with the dentist. BrushDJ’s site tells us that 59% of women and 35% of men regularly skip brushing their teeth before turning in (ew!), so clearly this app is a much-needed invention!
